InSAR with Sentinel-1 wave mode data
Building on our (Descartes Labs) previous work on accessing and processing Sentinel-1 IW mode bursts at scale, we have also developed access and processing mechanisms for Sentinel-1 wave mode data. Sentinel-1 wave mode data and its imaging characteristics are not widely known outside the ocean spectra community. Lack of awareness of Sentinel-1 wave mode can probably be attributed to over-dependence on Sentinel-1 GRD products and lack of support for archives containing a collection of images in conventional metadata conventions like STAC. In this work, we describe how Sentinel-1 wave mode is similar to SAR data acquired by commercial constellations and that it can be used for land applications just like commercially acquired SAR datasets. We also demonstrate InSAR applications with wave mode data.
